Philosophy of Educational Technology
According to Jean Piaget, the main goal of education is to create men and women who are capable of doing new things, and not simply repeating what other generations have done. Educational Technology is really the avenue to tread when one thinks about the creating and doing of new things. We are in a society which is saturated with technology and every day something new is being introduced. As an educator, my objective is to personalize and differentiate learning for every student, through the incorporation of technology in order to create the type of men and women Piaget describes.
I believe that it is vitally important to continue the process of learning new approaches and methodologies in order to relate to students when I venture into the classroom. We are living in a world which is influenced by technology and as a prospective teacher, it is my duty to improve students’ learning by using effective educational technological strategies. In accordance with Piaget, I hope to not only follow in the footsteps of my past teachers, but to be innovative and implement new teaching methods which incorporate technology in an effective manner.
Nowadays, individuals are constantly using technology, whether by e-mailing, being on Facebook or listening to music; it may be identified as a significant part of their lives. So, why not use what individual are so engaged in to teach them important things? It is easier to teach ideas to an individual when they already possess an interest in the method that is being used to teach it. Technology opens many avenues for students to gather more information, get a hands-on experience as it relates to the concept being taught, and also provide them with more practice. It is quite a downfall that with all the technology that we have today, the classrooms are similar to 50 years ago. It is my belief that students should be taught how to create Power-point presentations, compose e-mails, create podcasts etc. because they have all the tools at their fingertips. Information is readily available on YouTube and other such sites, thus the teacher can easily incorporate these videos into his/her lesson to make it more interesting.
One of my aims is to teach students so that they can become inventors. Technology is one of the world’s biggest attribute, thus it should be used more than it is being used now. As a future educator, I endeavor to increase in knowledge about technology each day in order to keep up-to-date with the new inventions, and furthermore foster the best learning environment for my students. If I am not current with the technological advancements, I am unable to create an environment for students to learn well and become inventors themselves. Educational Technology is ever changing, and teaching is dynamic. It is with this in mind that I believe that a teacher should always be flexible to adapt to changes, and inject the changes to benefit his/her students. Personally, technology will be an accessory, and not necessarily the center of the lesson. The integration of technology into the classroom curriculum is essential for students to succeed in the current society of computers and gadgets.
. In conclusion, my philosophy of Educational Technology basically comprises of the personalized learning of each student, appreciating the diversity of all learners in the classroom, and providing opportunities for learning. Educational Technology is a tool that affords me the opportunity to differentiate my teaching strategies to best meet the needs of my students in a learner-centered environment.
