Area is the size of a surface. It is a measure of its size. Every object has a surface, and that size of that surface may be quantified.
The square is used as the shape for the basic unit of area. A square of side 1cm covers an area of 1 squared centimeter or 1 cm^2.

Quadrilaterals are four-sided polygons, with four angles.
A Quadrilateral is 2-dimensional (a flat shape), closed (the lines join up), and has straight sides.
